Day 13: Preparing for Home

 It is now Monday and we are due to travel home on Wednesday. As there is a weight limit on the plane, we have to pack up some of our stuff; books, easel, paintings and treasures we have found on the beach  because they will make our bags too heavy. We filled boxes in the morning and, after a cup of coffee, set out for the post office. This is the only shop on the island but Robert and Fiona make sure that it has everything you need ....as well as some surprises! 


 We were a bit sad when we got back to the croft. It was going to be hard to leave this beautiful place and the people that had been so kind to us.

We made ourselves another cup of coffee, sat in the sun and looked and listened and enjoyed the peace till the sun got low in the sky.


This is a view I will never forget.

 Not all beaches are the same. There are some beaches that seem to collect all manner of things that we have lost or thrown away. On these beaches you can often find treasure if your willing to look. I can't tell you which beaches to treasure hunt on as their features and treasures vary; for example, you might find things from far away places on a storm beach; a shoe from Spain, a box with labels that tell you its from France. A storm beach is one which is at the mercy of particularly fierce waves and are often long and open. On the other hand a small cove beach may secretly collect passing sea debris as tides circle in and out of them. Day 14: Packing and Party

Our priority today was to make sure that we were ready for Amy to pick us up and take us to the airport for our flight back to Shetland tomorrow. We cleaned the croft, packed  and then went for a last wander;  I had spent the last two weeks  looking for whales and dolphins, without success, so this was also my last chance to sea watch. This place has the biggest clouds I saw many puffins on the sea...   I saw a huge ship on the horizon... .....a lot of horizon...... ... but I did not see a whale!  We spent our last evening with Steven. He made us a fantastic fish supper of haddock and lobster (from the Sunday catch). Showed us his collection of ancient objects and treated us to an extraordinary DJ set: never a dull moment on Fair Isle and always a surprise! We walked home at 11.30 and it was still quite light. Day 1: Travel: Leeds to Aberdeen (17/07/23)

If you have read the previous post, you will know how long this journey is. You can nearly get to Australia in the same amount of time - it is a long way.  On Monday morning, I woke up in a panic at 4am. I thought I had overslept but I had plenty of time. It was, however, critical that I caught the 6.08 train to Leeds  My bags weighed 15kg which is nearly 2.5 stones, so I would need to set off early for the station, as it might take me longer to walk there carrying such a lot of extra weight. I got on the train from Leeds to Aberdeen. This part of the trip would take me 6 hours. The train whizzed through lots of towns and cities, some I had visited many times, others that were new to me.  The East coast train line hugs the coast line so once we had passed Newcastle, I could often see the sea.
